Sweden is a powerhouse of European Hockey, so it’s no surprise that even on wheels, they show up and mean business. Australia, though not often thought of in this way, actually boasts a thriving hockey scene of its own, and these Legents have been around this game since the inception of the Masters Inline. But could they use their experience agains the pure hockey instinct of those born on ice like the Swedes?

The game set off with an intense first half, with both teams coming out positively. Australia drew first blood with a goal by #16 Dean Beliveau, assisted by Anthony Santalucia. However, this only served to warm up the cold hands, and Sweden quickly responded with goals from #3 John Redinger and #71 Ronnie Askholm, assisted by Stefan Jonsson, taking the lead 2-1 before the half. Sweden then came out in the second and continued their dominance, with Goals from Mikael Andersson (2), Torbjörn Westling, Stefan Jonsson, and another from Andersson, extending Sweden’s lead to an unassailable 7-1. Sweden had 4 times the shots on goal in this match, which offers up a picture of the tension the Aussies must have felt. Thiug this static also highlights the great work of the Aussie Keeper, Jeff Ells.

Looking ahead, Sweden will face off against Germany in their next game, while Australia will have a tough matchup against Canada. Both teams will be looking to build on their performances and continue their quest for Inline Hockey World Cup glory.
